“Whiskey in a Teacup”

What a book, and one I couldn’t put down. I started reading “Whiskey in a Teacup,” prior to our wedding, but with that crazy I didn’t get very far into it. The other night, when my nose was a bit stuffy and I was a bit chilled, I threw on some pjs, my robe and grabbed a glass of wine and read from around page 25 all the way through. I know I should have indulged in whiskey in a teacup literally, but the glass of red wine sounded more appealing at the time.

Dorothea always said that it was a combination of beauty and strength that made souther women “Whiskey in a Teacup.”

Reese Witherspoon did a phenomenal job writing this book. It’s more than a autobiography of Reese. It’s a lavish lifestyle guide to growing up in the South and all the mannerisms and etiquette that go with it. Reese dives into numerous southern recipes, tips for hosting dinner parties, dolling yourself up, monogramming and more.

Southern Culture

Ever since I lived in the south, for what seemed like the blink of an eye, I became smitten with southern culture. There is something about southern culture that seems warmer and more inviting than others. Everyone seems to get a long and kindness is a thing of the present and not past. The large old homes all fixed up and the elaborate furniture inside the homes is something to aspire for you own home.

Some of my favorite foods come from the south. First off the BBQ is mouth watering. I an promise you, until you have attended a southern BBQ you really have no idea what you are missing out on. The biscuits, corn bread, beans, drinks and more that go along with the BBQ are a slice of heaven.

Diving Into Recipes

You caught me, I am guilty, I haven’t tried any of the cocktails or food recipes Reese wrote about in, “Whiskey in a Teacup,” however I plan to really soon. I think one of our upcoming dinner parties will have to take on a southern theme. What do you think?

Some of my favorite recipes Reese includes in her book are:

  • Frozen Fruit Salad
  • Cheddar Biscuits
  • John’s BBQ Sauce
  • Corn Bread Chili Pie
  • Pulled Pork Sliders with Bourbon BBQ Sauce and Pickled Red Onions
  • Summer Squash Salad

I plan to make these recipes first, of course not all at one time because they don’t quite compliment each other.

Loyalty is a real southern tradition, and so is protecting our women.

My Personnel Book Favorites

Here are a few of my favorite parts of the book:

  • The wallpaper: This book makes me want to wallpaper our house. Not quite sure how my husband would feel about that though. Baby steps?
  • Music Playlists for different occasions. Some of the playlists are: Road Trip, Southern Party and Easter.
  • Hostess and Guest tips. I love hosting dinner parties and entertaining. Reese offers some fabulous tips for those of us who entertain all the time or those of us who desire too, but really don’t know where to start.
  • Southern language guide: I find it fascinating how most parts of the country have different accents and ways of saying stuff. Reese lays out some of the most common southern pronunciation key to help all of us that didn’t grow up in the south.
  • All the pictures. Pictures say a thousand words ones own voice can’t. Most biographies you read don’t have but a handful of pictures. Reese on the other hand includes pictures on almost every page, which helps tell so much more.

Thanks to you, I’m a good friend and a good cook, and I never wear sweatpants on airplanes.

Final Thoughts

Whiskey in a Teacup” is such a warm inviting book. You really feel like you are living life with Reese as she takes you on a journey of growing up in the South. I love the family stories she incorporates along the way, they really add additional depth to the book. I would highly recommend picking up a copy of this book. If you aren’t a Reese Witherspoon fan, and I don’t know how you couldn’t be, but if your not, you will at least learn about Southern lifestyle. Everyone could use a little Southern hospitality in their life.

Cheers!
