Building Your Professional Wardrobe

These days my closet is quite full with professional work attire. I really try to get pieces that I can both wear professionally and for fun, however this is a constant struggle. My work/ professional wardrobe is me. It’s the professional Jessica, and let’s face it if you know me you know professional Jessica just like everyday Jessica has to look on point all the time.

When I first started building my professional wardrobe (years ago) I struggled to not spend an arm and leg. I have learned over the years the best and most reasonably priced stores to ensure I look my best each and everyday.

I know clothes and materialistic things shouldn’t define you, however I find if I don’t look put together to a tee I don’t feel the best boss babe I can. Whereas when I look put together the boss babe in me is fierce and willing and ready to accomplish anything and everything. You have to look the part now don’t you?

While I don’t have to wear a suit everyday, I do need to be put together. I wear quite a few blazers and the occasional suit, but I also like to dress with a bit more flare. I love making my professional wardrobe fun, cheery and bright, as this is me. I am a woman who means business day and night.

Tips & Tricks to Not Pending a Fortune

  • Watch for sales. The best way to do this is to sign up for the email lists. I know this tends to clog your inbox, however I find this the best way to know when there is a good sale going on. The best sales aren’t when you expect them.
  • Buy staple pieces and pair with pops. A great friend of mind turned me on to Socialite tanks from Nordstrom and I love them. They are a higher cut tank that looks perfect under a blazer either with dress pants to dress it up or with a pair of jeans/normal pants to dress it down. Majority of the pieces I buy can be paired with multiple things, so that I can make multiple outfits from one pieces.
  • Buy timeless pieces. While it can be great to buy the “it” clothing now, it’s always a bummer when it goes out of style. I tend to stray away from the “it now” clothing and lean towards timeless pieces that won’t go out of style. This way you can invest in pieces that will be good for years to come.
  • Invest in good shoes and shoes that can be worn with a variety of different outfits. My go to work shoes are Calvin Klein and Anne Klein. Their heels are super comfy, so much so they can be worn to run through the airport when needed. Yes, I have done this.
  • Only buy pieces you love. Don’t invest in a piece just because you need something. This will help you not spend too much money and leave the budget for pieces you love.

Develop a professional wardrobe that’s you. Don’t look to others to dress you. Yes, grab inspiration from others, but make sure what you choose to wear is YOU. Dressing as YOU will help you live your best life and be the best boss babe you can be. All it takes is a cute outfit and pair of heels and a boss babe attitude and you are on your way to climbing that corporate ladder/mountain.
