Yard & Garden

All Things Garden and Plants

Whew! What a couple of weeks. We took some time this past week away from unpacking boxes to really hunker down and work on the yard. I absolutely love working on the yard, makes my heart so happy, and our yard so beautiful. When we lived at our town house downtown Denver, we didn’t have a yard and so we really couldn’t have a garden. I made do with numerous flower pots in that house, but it just wasn’t the same. This year we are blessed to have moved into our new house with a large yard and so much room to plant! Yay!

The previous owners to our house did quite a fabulous job landscaping but there were a few spots I could plant a few more perennials (and still are more), a garden bed and as always definitely flower pots.

Here is what I planted this year:

Garden

Tomato Varietals

  • Big Boy Tomato
  • Black Prince Heirloom Tomato
  • Red & Yellow Pear Tomatoes
  • Another Heirloom Tomato Varietal (Lost the tag to tell you exactly which one)

Pepper Varietals

  • Miniature Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Lemon Drop Pepper (New to me, apparently it’s spicy)
  • Jalapeño
  • Habanero

Beans

  • Hawaiian Pole Beans
  • Gold and Green Mix Pole Beans
  • Blue Lake Pole Beans

Herbs

  • Sweet Bail
  • Thai Basil
  • Dill
  • Garlic
  • Horseradish
  • Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Thyme
  • Oregano

Cucumbers

  • Regular Cucumbers
  • Pickle Cucumbers
  • Japanese Cucumbers

Others

  • Beets (LOVE me some beets)
Cooking in the Garden

I plan to fully embrace having a garden. I am looking forward to, fingers crossed everything grows well, make: dilly beans, salsa and pesto. In addition to making those three things I will use the vegetables on an every week basis, once they are ready, to help decrease the produce bill each week at the grocery store. I know planting a garden and buying all the garden tools can be a feat, however it’s definitely worth it in the end!

Perennials

I only planted a few perennials this year but don’t worry there will definitely be more.

Flower Pallet:We were fortunate to take over this house from people who loved to garden and loved plants as well. The previous lady had a plant pallet that she kept here for me to use. I first thought of doing wave petunias in it, but then I would have to buy them every year. I instead decided to do perennial succulents. Let’s hope they take and work (fingers crossed over here). With the flower pallet I have laid it down for a couple of weeks to let the plants take and get their roots a going before I will stand it up.

  • Peonies:I absolutely adore the large flowers on peonies and the fragrance is one that can’t be beat.
  • Hydrangea:Did you know that hydrangeas change color based on the pH level in the soil. Meaning you could buy one color and the flowers bloom another color.
  • Yarrow:I inadvertently picked up a small yarrow plant while grabbing a hundred other things at the garden center, but it was a good accident.

Annuals

Flower pots are so much fun to put together. This year I put together 6, which Is 2 more than I did last year.  My fiancé and I visited a local greenhouse/garden center to get all of our plants, and let me tell you, the variety of plants didn’t disappoint. They literally had everything I could possible imagine. I highly recommend visiting a local greenhouse/garden shop when buying your plants, flower, trees, etc. Not only are you supporting your local economy, but the quality of the plants, flowers, trees, etc., tend to be better, and the service impeccable.

Flower Pot 1:
  • Citronella Scented Geranium
    • Yes, you are reading that correctly citronella, as in keep mosquitos away type of plant. I stumbled across this citronella scented geranium on our way to the  check out and couldn’t pass it up. I have seen different scented geraniums in the past but never citronella. What the perfect plant for our patio
  • Bronze Leaf Begonias
Flower Pot 2 and 3:
  • Yellow Calla Lilly
  • Burgundy Velour Wave Petunias
Flower Pot 4:
  • Yellow Cana
  • Orange Cana
  • Black Cana
  • Peppy Cerise Wave Petunias
Flower Pot 5:
  • Premier Dark Purple/Red Dahlias
  • Sweet Potato Vine
Flower Pot 6:

Let me preference this flower pot by saying, I wasn’t planning on a 6th flower pot, and even had to go out and buy it. Apparently, with my love for flowers I got carried away when walking through the greenhouse, and I had a few more flowers than pots. This pot is a combination of everything I had left, so no judging on the randomness. I arranged in such a way that I hope it blooms into full beautiful wonders.

  • Big Leaf Begonias
  • Bronze Leaf White Begonias
  • Argyranthemum
  • Wave Petunias
